Presidente da LATICFA – Latinamerican Craniofacial Association

2024 Joint Cleft and Craniofacial Congress

Organized by:
Latin American Craniofacial Association (LATICFA),
Brazilian Association of Craniofacial Surgery (ABCCMF),
Brazilian Association of Cleft Lip and Palate (ABFLP);

The 2024 Joint Cleft and Craniofacial Congress represents a successful collaboration between the Latin American Craniofacial Association (LATICFA), the Brazilian Association of Craniofacial Surgery (ABCCMF), and the Brazilian Association of Cleft Lip and Palate (ABFLP); three internationally recognized and respected organizations for medical professionals in Latin America and Brazil.

LATIFCA, founded in 2016, has provided support to numerous cleft centers all over South and Central America. Both the ABCCMF, which was founded in 1994 by pioneering first and second generation Brazilian craniofacial surgeons, and the ABFLP, founded in 1969, have been instrumental in promoting a major shift towards a multidisciplinary approach in cleft treatment and rehabilitation.

Although the ABCCMF and the ABFLP were originally created to address different medical specialties, these two organizations, along with the recently founded LATICFA, collaborated at the 2018 Brazilian Congress to form a unique partnership. The 2018 Congress was sponsored and supported by Smile Train, and endorsed by The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, which published a special supplement containing Congress abstracts and papers.1 This Congress represents the largest combined meeting of these organizations since Cleft 2009; organized by SOBRAPAR Hospital, which was the first ever South American international congress of cleft lip, palate and related craniofacial anomalies.2

The 2018 Congress, which featured guest speakers from fourteen countries, along with representatives from the prestigious Smile Train medical advisory board, launched a new era of collaborative work in the cleft field.
The 2024 Joint Cleft and Craniofacial Congress, which is scheduled to take place in Campinas, Sao Paulo, from August 29th to August 31st, will offer one day of pre-meeting courses, followed by two days of official Congress courses. The pre-meeting courses will take place in three conference rooms. One pre-meeting course, primarily organized by the ABCCMF, will focus on orthognathic surgery in cleft and non-cleft patients. The other two pre-meeting courses, organized by Smile Train, will focus on various aspects of cleft care.

One of the conference rooms will feature a full day of discussions on hot topics, new trends, and new devices for training and education, and will include leaders in their respective fields, as organized by Roberto Flores. During morning focus will be given to virtual reality or Simulare (cleft lip, cleft palate or the newest version of alveolar bone grafting) performed by an expert in the field. During afternoon, safety and quality protocols will be discussed among with teams focusing on how to improve safety, patients adherence and prevention of loss to follow up and compliance to longitudinal follow up.

A third conference room will feature a total of eight hours of presentations, divided equally between speech pathology and orthodontics. The primary objectives of the presentations on speech pathology are to support greater collaboration between surgeons and speech pathologists, and create a Smile Train document that will serve as a guide for VPI treatment in cleft patients at any age.

The four hours of presentations regarding speech pathology will include live VPI patient examinations and extensive discussion. Attendees will be divided in groups, and each group will have an opportunity to discuss diagnoses and possible approaches. Depending on time availability, several specific lectures are planned to be presented, along with discussion of findings, workflow, and treatment provided to examined patients.

The primary objective of the four hours of presentations on orthodontics is to introduce cost effective methods to maximize satisfactory treatment outcomes.

The orthodontic presentations can be in group format, as is the case with speech pathology, or can be provided in lecture format on specific important topics as determined by the committee. The goals will be to offer treatment alternatives to nasoalveolar molding (NAM), and address essential topics such as outcomes of low cost hardware devices, challenges in treating patients with extremely low financial resources, and helping cleft centers access alternative solutions that will provide satisfactory treatment outcomes.

The commercial meeting release occurred on August 23th, and gathered companies from all over the country, which are willing to comply and participate, exposing their materials to our professionals.

I believe that the 2024 Joint Cleft and Craniofacial Congress will serve as a model forum for education and collaboration in cleft treatment care, and will present Smile Train as the premier foundation that supports these endeavors and objectives. 3,4
